I do agree with Criminologist Robert Merton’s theory that crime in America is caused by a social structure which holds out the same goals to all its members but does not give them equal opportunities to help them achieve those goals. The theory he out forward is better known as the Strain theory which states that the society fails to provide the means but does fail to expect from individual to achieve the great American dreams or social goal which makes one successful. The gap that is created here leads individuals engaging in crime in order to climb the ladder and be “successful”.
